Malaysia and Brunei!

In January, Dan purchased some bargain airplane tickets to Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. This past week we used them and went on vacation! We wanted to take advantage of living in Asia while we can and visit another country. Here is our vacation in pictures.

5pm. Davis is wide awake, but in his pajamas ready for his flight!

When we arrived, we took a taxi to Farida's Bed and Breakfast, where we were greeted by Grandma Farida and Sophie. They were so hospitable and took such great care of us. If any of you ever travel to Kota Kinabalu, this would be the friendliest place to stay! We loved our time with them.

Davis's favorite part of our room was the step into the bathrooom. He mastered standing and then crawling up into it. What fun!

As we walked around the city, most of the restaurants were empty at lunch time. This is because we visited during Ramadan and during this month Muslim people fast from sunrise until sunset. We learned so much about the Muslim faith and met so many incredibly nice people around the city.
Here we are outside of a mosque we toured.

In order to enter I had to be covered to my feet, so they gave me this robe to wear. The room I am in is where the men wash before they enter to pray.

Davis spent most days on Dan's back. He even learned to somehow fall asleep while riding. :)

We went on a canopy walk high above the rainforest! The bridge was a bit wobbly and made my legs feel like jello, but it was beautiful!
Mt. Kinabalu was another stop on our tour. This is the highest mountain in Southeast Asia. We would have really liked to have hiked it, but we are a bit out of shape and it would have been really hard with Davis strapped to Dan's back!! We settled for a view of the mountain (under the cloud cover!)

Eating lots of Indian food was one of main goals on this trip. I think I devoured at least a few pounds of Roti Canai and Chicken Curry on this vacation. YUMMY!!!!

From Kota Kinabalu we decided to be spontaneous and visit the country of Brunei. It was only a couple ferry rides away! Apparently, this country is wealthy because of oil. They are worried about it running out, so they are beefing up tourism. We reaped the benefits! Here is one of the mosques. The gold dome is actually 18K gold!! The Sultan has one on his palace that is solid gold...

Thousands of the people choose to live in the water village. It began 600 years ago as a fishing village, and now has schools, a fire station, a police station, restaurants, a health clinic. Basically, most places that a town needs! The Sultan has offered everyone free land if they want to move off of the water, but most do not because of the wonderful community they have in the village. Here we are at a restaurant in the community. (eating Indian food again!!)

Our new friend in the water village. We met her while we were waiting for our water taxi.

On our way to and from Brunei we had a one night stop over at a bed and breakfast where we had a view of Survivor Island. The first season was filmed here. You can visit the island and stay at one of the several resorts located on it. (could anyone ever guess there were resorts when they were filming!!) We only viewed in from the water.

Dan has named this picture "Where there are no cribs" Davis slept pretty well in this makeshift crib, but he was definatly ready to be back home in his own bed when the trip was over!!

Davis has become really great at crawling. While we were waiting for our flight to come home, he loved the big open space of the airport. We loved being able to let him explore and chase the luggage cart!!

Special People -- Nanay & Tatay

Happy 67th Birthday Nanay!
Since we have been in the Philippines we have a couple who have adopted us as their kids. :) They have been married for 48 years, have 6 kids and many grandchildren. Their love for the Lord, each other and all they meet is shown in their lives. Yesterday we were invited to celebrate Nanay's birthday with family and friends.

Davis was passed around. Here he is with his Lola. (Tagalog for Grandma)

Davis playing with some of the grandkids. He even got to taste some fried lumpia (similar to egg roll) and fried chicken -- as soon as Mom noticed the cuisine was changed to cheerios and banana! :)

At the party there was a program of worship music, yummy food, speaking words of encouragement to Nanay, and even some dancing! Nanay danced with Tatay and also her sons. It was very special.

I had the privledge of sharing what Nanay means to me in my life.

We love Nanay & Tatay!
